As you may already know, Halloween (October 31) is coming… This date is usually perfect for in-game events. So we shouldn’t be surprised if our favorite games start to be decorated with pumpkins. Well, following that reasoning, it’s good to know that Blade & Soul already has things organized for the party.
According to the information, the Halloween event of the game Blade & Soul will start on October 16th. Named Blade & Ghoul, the event will last from October 16th to November 13th. And of course, during this time, many quests and rewards (including a hunt for two curious characters) will be available to players.
To participate you must accept the Candycloud on the Horizon mission, then you must go to the village of Jadestone and from there enter the portal that will place you in Candycloud park. The goal is to kill Yippi and Skippi and by doing so you will receive many rewards. You have daily quests with which you can get Pumpkin Spice Candy, these candies will also be obtained by entering the game every day.
Candies can be exchanged for gifts until next December, so you will have enough time to think about what to invest.
Finally, October will be filled with curious adventures, “tricks and tricks”. If you like Blade & Soul, it is good to start preparing so that you can earn all the possible rewards.
For the most patient among you, here’s a look at what the future holds for us. We have selected for you a dozen of the most promising MMORPG 2019 Free-to-Play titles, and to these we have also added some titles that have not allowed to leak certain information about their business model. We strongly recommend you to keep an eye on them or, even better, constantly review MMO League to stay updated on the latest news about their release.
Developer: Couch Studios
Description: Ember Sword is a small project that, if it can prove to be up to expectations, could really deserve a respectable place in the crowded MMO landscape. Son of an old school role-playing philosophy, this title seems to want to take the best of the past and adapt it in a modern key, while giving players a great creative space, which will allow them to literally give life to the game world with the own in-game activities. Just to give an example, in the game a user can literally buy a specific piece of land, which he can then monetize by starting a store or any other business.
The players will not pay to be able to play but there will be a premium currency called Pixel Token, which will be protected by blockchain and, according to the developers, will guarantee the birth of a fervent economy which, if desired, can also yield real money to the “investors” who decide to use their skills within the game. As intriguing, everything is still a bit smoky at the moment and, at least in the short term, we will have to see how the developers will manage an entire world mostly empty, given that it is unthinkable that all users start running an activity right away specific. We will see, for now we are very intrigued.
Strengths: Certainly, the peculiar economic model of the game that, if it really proves able to function and to keep the promises made, could seriously generate a flourishing in-game economy that would return a free to play product totally detached from any element pay to win.
Business Model: Free to play with optional monthly subscription. The team promises that the game will never have any kind of mechanics similar to pay to win. Players will be able to support the economy by paying developers a small fee on transactions made with other players (based on the fictitious premium currency called Pixel Token).
Current Status: Although it is already interesting for many of its shown mechanics, Ember Sword is currently still in an embryonic state and, according to the developers, will be released between the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021. It is long gentlemen, it is long…
Magic: The Gathering MMORPG
Developer: Cryptic Studios
Description: When it was announced last year, the new MMORPG set in the world of the famous card game was an event capable of making the deepest wet dream of every self-respecting nerd come true. It was for some time that players from all over the world wanted to be able to tread the numerous Magic plans within a massive dedicated game and, in an inexplicable way to tell the truth, no one had yet come forward to make this fantasy a reality. To date, however, after more than a year since that dreamy announcement, the situation has not changed much and, if you try to find some information about the game, you will find that little or nothing has been leaked during this time frame. Designing an MMO is certainly an extremely long process and the total lack of new information suggests that, at the time of the announcement, the title was still in a pre-production phase. We just have to wait and hope that 2019 is a year full of novelties for this highly desired MMORPG.
Strengths: Since nothing is known about the game itself, it is difficult to find a real strength; we will have to let ourselves be aware that a Magic MMORPG is being developed (and it is not cheap) and that Cryptic Studios is a team that has already shown that it can do it.
Business Model: It has been stated that the game will be free to play.
Current State: We do not know but something tells us the development is still in a rather backward state.
Description: Set in a post-apocalyptic context with strongly dark colors, Mad World is an interesting browser game that can be played both on computer and on mobile devices. Described by the developers themselves as an MMORPG that experiments with elements never inserted before within the genre, the game will offer both PvP and PvE content, immersing the player in a chaotic and obscure world, where everything will be characterized to ensure an adequate emotional impact. The development team promises that in Mad World there will be no generic NPCs ready to assign us the classic quests common to many MMOs but, on the contrary, will present us with credible and often tormented characters, whose actions and requests will be a direct consequence of their personal emotionality. Although many details about the game remain unknown at the moment, the films released by the development team over time seem to promise very well, both from a playful and a visual point of view, characterized by a peculiar artistic direction and almost horror tones, which will know surely make the happiness of all the lovers of lugubrious atmospheres.
Strengths: If we reserve the right to express opinions on gameplay when we know more, at the moment one of the most interesting features of the production is represented by the way in which the developers have succeeded in characterizing the game world that, from now on, appears obscure, cruel and brutal.
Business Model: Free to play
Current Status: With the first prototype of the game made in February 2016, the game should now be on the home straight, with a planned release by 2019.
Developer: Digital Extremes & Human Head Studios
Description: More than a year after the announcement, Survived By seems to acquire more and more form, reconfirming itself from time to time as a title not particularly suitable for the general public, but absolutely intriguing and interesting for all those who are looking for a deep and particularly hardcore experience. The game will be an intriguing mix between a classic MMO experience, though topped with a graphic style in pixel art and an isometric view from above, and a bullet hell, in which reflections and coordination will be an absolutely central element in the economy of gameplay. Death itself (and consequently the difficulty) is considered a very important part of the whole experience, and the developers are keen to reiterate it even in the various trailers and in the informative material released for the game. Dying we will lose much of what we have accumulated previously and our character will be lost forever; at each “respawn” we will reincarnate in a descendant of the avatar we used before and only a small part of our assets can be recovered. For the rest, Survived By seems to behave as you would expect, with dungeons to clean up, bosses to defeat, items to craft and activities to be undertaken together with our friends, only in much more hardcore sauce.
Strengths: The declared will of wanting to deliberately focus on a little permissive and punitive experience.
Business Model: Free to play
Current Status: At the moment the game is in a closed beta phase and is not yet accessible to anyone. We trust you will miss the final release shortly.
Description: Interesting title that we had already spotted last year, Lost Ark is set up as an intriguing MMORPG with a valuable and spectacular hack’n’slash combat system that presses the accelerator hard on the slope of the game. more unbridled action. As can be seen from the numerous gameplay trailers released by the developers, it will be the combat system that is one of the flagships of the production that, by presenting itself with a system strictly without coupling, will allow us to ring combos and offer ourselves in numerous moves from the high adrenal rate. The graphic section is also very inspired, which, thanks to an isometric view from above, typical of almost all the hack’n’slash titles of this type, offers well-sketched and evocative settings. After a fair amount of development time and several beta phases in which Korean players could get their first impressions of the game, the title is about to officially debut in South Korea, with the development team promising that the game will receive support constant and massive post launch, which will expand the game formula with new content released on a regular basis. Unfortunately, we Western players will have to wait a bit before seeing the title in our country and it is not yet clear when a translated version will be available. The hope is that we do not wait longer than necessary.
Strengths: Without a doubt the combat system, which promises to be as spectacular as it is deep and stratified.
Business Model: Free to play
Current Status: the game has been made available in South Korea since last November 2018. For a global release it will be necessary to wait until at least 2019 forwarded, if not later.
Ascent: Infinite Realm
Description: Created by the same development team that gave birth to TERA and Playerunknow’s Battlegrounds, Ascent: Infinite Realms is an MMORPG that combines the classic with original mechanics, offering a setting that strongly winks the eye at steampunk imagery, while allowing itself some elements that we can define fantasy in the classical sense. Once you create your character by choosing one of the available classes, the player will find himself immersed in a game that has many features in common with the more traditional massive titles, including the countless activities to be performed (from quests to dungeons, up to the raid), but that shows its most peculiar side when it puts us at the helm of powerful totally customizable airships, which will allow us to sail the skies of the game and engage in spectacular aerial combat. It may seem like a trivial feature, but we can assure you that seeing dozens of players each flying their own way, shooting each other while heavens and other creatures also begin to appear in the skies is something that can galvanize even the most apathetic of the players. Although in a sketchy form only, through the informative material disseminated by the developers, we were also able to watch simple platform phases (!), While the presence of a housing system that should offer great possibilities for customization to the players is confirmed.
Strengths: A game world that blends together different contexts, from high fantasy to steampunk, where players can both take part in traditional battles on foot and hover in flight by guiding airships, airships and other means halfway between the futuristic and the retro.
Business Model: Free to play
Current Status: The game should now have reached a very advanced point in its development and the long-awaited closed beta phase should therefore be imminent. Despite this, however, the development team has not yet announced any official release date, although we expect new information regarding this soon.
Project TL (formerly Lineage Eternal)
Description: Project TL is a story to say the least troubled, since this new title of NCSoft was born directly from the ashes of the previous Lineage Eternal, a title that had also passed some beta phases in Korean territory but that, due to the poor quality of the title (also highlighted by the very demanding fans who hardly endured seeing an exponent of the Lineage saga appear so subdued) and of the split of the two companies that were working on the project, had then been totally abandoned, ending up in an abyss of doubts , uncertainties and incommunicability. A few years after that unsuccessful project, Project TL will now impose itself as the total reconstruction of the basic idea of Eternal, taking up the game world, the narrative (presumably) and some assets, but reorganizing everything with a new engine (the evergreen Unreal 4) and new mechanics better studied, in order to present themselves to the fans in a finally dignified form. From the few videos shown of the game, although it is still impossible to draw any kind of conclusion, the game seems to promise enormously well, showing off an absolutely amazing hack’n’slash combat system to watch (we hope that, mouse in hand, the sensations will be the same).
Strengths: The grand return of a legendary MMORPG saga, finally resumed after the slip (erased in time) of Lineage Eternal.
Business Model: Presumably free to play
Current Status: The latest news wanted a first phase of closed beta to start by the end of 2018, unfortunately only for Korean territories. For a Western outing, we will have to wait at least (and at least underline) until next year.
Neverwinter is a free-to-play Italian MMORPG based on the classic paper role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, which will immerse us in the classic setting of the Forgotten Realms.
As always, we will be able to create our character by choosing race and class, without forgetting the possibility of choosing his past history and the religious faith to be assigned to him. The combat system is very lively and is managed in real time by the player, without any sort of automation to break the rhythm. In the game there is an adventure editor, called Foundry , which will allow us to create our own customized adventures that can be played by everyone.
Neverwinter is an excellent MMORPG; it combines classic elements with others that are more original and fresh (like the combat system) accompanied by an evocative and evocative atmosphere, as well as by a highly respected graphic engine. If you’ve always been a fan of D&D, you can’t possibly miss it; otherwise a test is still required.
Dungeons & Dragons is certainly one of the most popular role-playing games, inspiring tens of thousands of different adventures that involve players from 1974 to the present. The background that he brings with him is vast and it is not surprising that, outside of his original pen and paper habitat, thousands of adaptations and titles inspired by D&D have been made available for computers (and consoles).
Neverwinter is the last title to be based on this universe; an MMORPG that, trying to remain as faithful as possible to its inspirational product, will allow us to immerse ourselves in the Forgotten Realms to live our adventures.
Races, classes and religions
As usual, the first fundamental task will be to create our character. The classes available are all based on rather standard archetypes and range from humans to different variants of elves, to then pass to orcs, dwarves and the demonic Tiefling. The customization is not very high since, apart from some peculiar and secondary aesthetic detail, all the classes have a rather similar humanoid aspect. Even the choice of the predominant feature of our character remains within the classical canons, allowing us to choose between the ever present strength, magic, dexterity and little else. It should be noted, however, that, as increasingly happens, particular care has been taken in the realization of the equipment which, although not comparable to the stylistic levels reached by other productions (Tera, for example), is however well done and differentiated for each class.
The possibility of forging non-incisive personality traits for the purposes of the game is welcome, but nevertheless useful for increasing immersiveness, such as the preferred background and divinity.
Who does it by itself, use the Foundry
Once the creation of our character is complete we will be free to dive into the beautiful world of the Forgotten Realms, beginning our epic story that will see us face quests, eradicate monsters and level up like in any other MMORPG. Unfortunately, the plot of the game, although present and in any case significantly more accurate than other titles, is not particularly exciting and does not completely involve the player. Even the missions themselves, in the long run, could come a bit boring since, in the end, they recycle predefined schemes for the duration of the game. Fortunately, to significantly increase the value of the game, there is a tool called Foundry. Foundry is basically an editor that allows all players to try their hand at creating their own adventure, with their own dynamics, their own environment and their own characters. Needless to say, a feature of this kind multiplies the variety that can be obtained beyond doubt, not to mention longevity.
Each mission that we will face, among other things, will not be an end in itself, but will allow us to gain experience and improve ourselves, as if it were a section designed by the developers (see video below).
The new fashion is to make combos. Always
As in most recent MMORPGs, in which a sort of revolution seems to be underway to promote its “rejuvenation”, Neverwinter proposes a peculiar combat system, very marked by action and far from the mechanics that the classics of the genre have accustomed us to. The merits are always the same: while the hands are being bored, one is not bored, one actively participates in the battles and the result of them is no longer just a matter of mere statistics.
Neverwinter proposes a peculiar combat system, very marked by action and far from the mechanics that the classics of the genre have accustomed us to.
Attacking and using abilities are no longer automatic processes: to inflict the blows we will first have to target the targets in real time, with the result that a successful attack (or one failed) will also be due to the skill of the player holding the mouse and keyboard.
Originality and personalization
The most original aspect of the game is undoubtedly the Foundry, an element that is not often found in MMORPGs. As written above, it is also noteworthy that the combat system is special and very funny.
Finally, it is worth mentioning the possibility of customizing secondary parameters of our character, such as the religion professed and past history.
Graphics and sound
Wandering through the world of Neverwinter always has its charm, especially if the settings of Dunegons & Dragons have a dedicated niche in your heart.
At a strictly technical examination, Neverwinter is almost brutalized by decidedly better competitors from this point of view but, if on the “mathematical” side the game is not surprising, with good and never exalted polygonal details and counts, from the stylistic one the game of Cryptic Studios succeeds to compete head-on against most of their rivals.
The setting is recreated with care, and the dark tones present will make the happiness of more than one player.
Neverwinter has all the credentials to entertain all D&D fans (and not only) for a long time.
Beyond the mechanics and the good, but not surprising, missions, the real surprise of the game is represented by the Foundry that, unless you make dramatic steps backwards, should guarantee variety and fun for an indefinite amount of time.
Leaving the possibility for users to “create the game itself” is always a good move, capable of making a contribution not just to the experience.
On the other hand, D&D has always been a game where the adventures experienced were strictly personal and, in a sense, this Neverwinter is no exception.
We are looking forward to get our hands on the next planned releases of which we will discuss in the following paragraphs … but what to play in the meantime to quench our thirst?
The following games are not only the best or most played games of the moment in our opinion but also those that give us more confidence in updates, events and “general health” in view of 2019 and beyond, thanks to the constant support work of the developers.
In short, regardless of their release date, here are the MMORPGs on which we think it makes more sense to invest our time at the moment.
Dungeons & Dragons – Neverwinter
Neverwinter is a heavyweight in the category of free-to-play MMORPGs that, punctually, we cannot fail to include in our summaries. Based on the setting of the Forgotten Realms of the evergreen universe of Dungeons & Dragons, Neverwinter is structured like a MMORPG with a rather classic cut , yet with an ” action ” approach to combat typical of other productions.
One of the strengths of the entire production is undoubtedly represented by the fascinating settingthat players will be able to explore in each corner. Moreover, thanks to the official DnD license, many old users will be able to re-meet faces and known places with pleasure. In our review we noted with pleasure the attention paid by the developers in the plot and in the immersiveness in general, going to recover a typical tradition of role-playing games that over the years had lost a little.
Since the launch, the game team has been very attentive to the development of its creature, periodically releasing updates and new content. The latest major update, The Heart of Fire, dates back less than 2 months and introduced tons of new content: a completely new campaign with grotesque and playful tones, a new skirmish, a total revision of the Crafts system and a new class balancing, as well as events, rewards and shovel items.
Considering the pace that the developers have accustomed us to in recent years, we can expect with reasonable certainty not only juicy expansions for the new year, but also a growing user base: this is why we have decided to reward Neverwinter as one of the best MMORPGs to play in 2019.
Skyforge is a good (at times excellent) MMORPG from many points of view, but let’s say it right away: the main reason it is on the podium is that in Skyforge you can … become a God . Literally. And for literally, we mean that your PG will become the biggest double , he will hit stronger, he will move faster, he will be able to change his class on the fly by choosing any of the 15 available, he will be entitled to participate in raids reserved for divinities in which face the most epic enemies that can be found in the game, and if you are good enough, you will bring hundreds of followers under your protective wing(ie other players) who can worship you and dedicate temples to you to increase your power. Yes, it’s so cool to be a God.
If all this hasn’t convinced you yet, forget it, Skyforge is not for you. Otherwise, I could tell you how this game also has an interesting progression system, even if the game world is a bit too instantaneous … how? Have you already run to try it?
One of the distinctly action-packed MMORPGs from which we have never detoxed and which we have continued to appreciate over time is TERA. Among all, it is perhaps the one that most embodies the standard of fast-paced MMO games, which puts an impressive amount of weapons and fighting styles on the plate, all within a fantasy context that is perhaps not particularly original but certainly taken care of and well scripted.
The reasons that led us to include it in this 2019 list are basically two: the recent (last April) landing on Xbox One and PS4, as well as the propensity of developers to release continuous and substantial updates: if you think that the porting on console can having penalized PC users, you are very wrong! With a post in his official blog, EnMasse Entertainment announced for March 2019 a very important major update (V80), which will raise the level cap to 70 … a small revolution that will bring with it new quests, a new system of bosses Open -World and, we assume, new content for the endgame, armor, weapons, and various items.
Announced well in advance after the public success of the previous chapter, GTArcade has finally released the follow-up to League of Angels.
Playable for free through a simple window of our browser, League of Angels 2 allows us to immerse ourselves in a fantasy world highly dominated by MMORPG mechanics.
Unlike the predecessor, which allowed the choice of the class of his character, in LoA 2 we will have the faculty to determine only the sex of our avatar, decreeing its development as possible only during the course of the game.
The chief fault of the progenitor, who returns here more domineering than ever, is the excessive automatism with which the mechanics of the gameplay are set , which leaves very little space to the player, marrying perhaps with a user unaccustomed to the strategy but who will avoid in a one hit any player much more “committed”.
Worthy of mention, however, the technical sector of the title, which represents one of the highest points (if not the highest) ever touched by a browser game.
➔ Main points:
Graphically the best in circulation on browser game.
Fully automated gameplay.
Artistically more than valuable.
Dozens of selectable heroes .
Here we are again! After a few years from the release of the previous title of the same name, GTArcade released the browser game League of Angels 2 on the internet, a title that goes back to most of the original game’s framework, trying to make it unbelievable in every respect.
If you still have our review of the first chapter of the series in mind, you will no doubt remember how we didn’t exactly praise the game, criticizing them in large part for the excessive automatism it permeated, with the aim of going extremely towards a user who he would have easily exchanged the term “MMO” with an abbreviation of some military organ.
Despite this (in our opinion) huge defect, the game has however had a stratospheric success, so as to convince the developers to make a second episode. Will GTArcade have decided to change direction or, following the motto “team that wins does not change”, has preferred to continue undaunted on its own way?
Between monsters and angels
Would you ever say that this is the result of a browser game?
Unlike its predecessor, in League of Angels 2 we will not be able to choose the class of our character, when starting a new game. The only choice that will be granted to us will be the one related to the sex of our character that, based on which of the two genres we will select, will make us impersonate a preset avatar. To tell the truth, as the gameplay is made, this is not a big lack since, again with reference to the previous chapter, the difference between the various classes was not so noticeable (apart from graphic differences) but still leaves a bit bitter in the mouth to see that you are facing a step backwards compared to the past chapter.
In any case, the substance of the game has remained almost unchanged, in spite of the numerous criticisms received.
Forget about being able to manage your character to the millimeter and, more importantly, the dynamics of battles. Today as yesterday, 90% of the League of Angels 2 gameplay is completely automated and relegates the player to be a spectator who, from time to time, is asked to press a few buttons. The clashes will always and in any case be completely automatic, with the exception of special attacks, which will be activated with a mouse click when the relative icon (a golden color around the sticker of one of our characters) will be visible on the screen; STOP; nothing else. This is all that the fighting in LoA 2 has to offer.
Fortunately, the management of your PG and the party in general is slightly deeper than the combat system , even if by “slightly” we mean just the narrowest sense of the term. By playing and getting rewards, we will enter into “possession” of new heroes that we can add to our team, each of which has a certain level of rarity and power.
90% of the League of Angels 2 gameplay is completely automated
Through a special menu, it will be up to us to decide which heroes to deploy and take us into battle, trying to get the greatest attack strength available.
Decimating opponents, then, we will level up and, through special objects obtainable in the game, we will also be able to enhance ourselves in certain parameters and obtain new abilities. Although all this adds a bit more depth to the game, the fact that even these passages are totally skippable and can be managed independently by the system, helps to sweep away the slight strategic patina that had settled on the game.
During the fighting, we will not have much chance of interaction
For the rest, the game proceeds smoothly throughout its structure which, on balance, provides only for an incessant repetition of clashes of increasing “difficulty” , at the end of which we will be rewarded with a score from one to three stars.
Few stories, if from the point of view of the game League of Angels 2 will certainly not meet the tastes of the most hardcore players, from the technical and graphic one the game of GTArcade represents one of the most beautiful things you have ever seen on a browser window game.
The beautiful 2D backgrounds, conceived from a superb art direction inspired by the most classic of fantasy universes, blend together with 3D models of monsters and characters that are really great and rich in details, which pay the only price of an aliasing sometimes a bit too strong, but hardly manageable in a clientless title.
The GTArcade game represents one of the most beautiful things you have ever seen on a browser game window.
Before making a judgment on League of Angels 2 it is necessary to understand it and enter into the mentality of those who will be its main users.
League of Angels 2 is clearly a game for many but not for everyone.
The GTArcades have deliberately focused on a purely casual range of users, who seeks immediate fun but which continues over the long term and who gives them the feeling of constant and sustained improvement, without having to work too hard to obtain it.
In short, LoA 2 is in effect a casual-sized MMORPG, which voluntarily avoids anyone looking for a deeper and more layered experience. Seen in this light, League of Angels 2 carries out its task in an excellent manner, offering content and entertainment to players in large quantities. If you are such purists, however, go elsewhere: League of Angels is not for you.
Proceeding relentlessly in providing massive content support to its excellent MMO hack’n’slash, Grinding Gear Games has announced during these hours the official release date of Legion, the new expansion dedicated to the famous Path of Exile coming soon on the game servers.
Starting from next June 7, for all platforms on which the game is available, it will be possible to access all the new content of the expansion, which aims to give a real shock to the gameplay of the game.
According to what reported on the official website of the game, the first major addition to the title will be represented by the Timeless Monoliths, which are special artifacts with which you can interact to reveal some fights between legions crystallized over time, which will allow players to deal with enemies of various kinds, with rewards aligned with the danger of the same.
Among other things, in addition to the inevitable assortment of new items obtainable, we point out the introduction of two new archetypes within the game, renamed Blood and Sand Gladiator and Rage Berserker, and a whole makeover of the entire system of combat melee, which will undergo a real revamp with the introduction of Legion.
In addition, if you wish, in the shop have been introduced two “Legion Supporter Pack”, which with a variable disbursement will allow you to get in-game sets called Cult of Darkness and Blood Knight.
In case you want to get a deeper idea about all the news that Legion will put on the plate during the next month of June, we suggest you to take a look at the special page on the official website of the game (which you can see by connecting to the following address: https://www.pathofexile.com/legion), which lists all the most significant news.
If you are eager to learn more about the expansion, we report below the official trailer of the same published by the development team that, in addition to giving you some useful visual clue to better frame the focal points of the content, contains the commentary of the developers themselves. Good vision!
As we have been able to reiterate over and over again, sometimes explicitly sometimes less, that of MMORPGs is an incredibly vast world, which runs smoothly through dozens and dozens of different strands and which, depending on the circumstances, manages to adapt and to transform itself in a sometimes even particularly important way, though without ever betraying the roots of the genre that inevitably make the genre of belonging very definable.
Originally born on beaches only and strictly PC, the genre later opened, not without difficulty, to other platforms, arriving also on consoles and, finally, mobile devices. At each step there was no lack of different hybridizations and, although with mixed results, the tendency has always been to capitalize on the potential of the reference machine to make titles that fit fully with the hardware they were running on. Since the time is finally ripe, we, therefore, decided to create a brief article that, drawing a handful of games among the myriad available, could offer a good overview of the MMO titles available on Android devices. Given the incredible vastness of the subject, some games are due to the force of things to stay out but we trust that, although not completely complete, this article will help you find a game to have fun on the go.
Enjoy the reading!
An old school MMORPG, of those like you don’t make any more!
Economic Model: Monthly Subscription
Description: The one represented by Teon is a very particular case within the mobile landscape and that, in a certain sense, puts it almost like a title so classic and faithful to the stylistic features of the genre to make it a sort of “rebel”. Against all market logic, the developers have in fact thought of inserting into a MMORPG designed exclusively for the mobile market a mandatory monthly fee to be able to play, in spite of 90% of the competition that instead focuses on a free model stuffed however with microtransactions. The result of this choice? An extremely refined game, balanced and without the shadow of that plague called pay-to-win, all with an aesthetic sector and a playability that gives a nod to the masterpieces of the past. Try it, at least for the 3 free days provided by the developer.
From PC to smartphone, Albion Online is always very valuable!
Publisher: Sandbox Interactive
Economic Model: Free to Play with optional monthly fee
Description: as you may already know, Albion Online is a game with a double face, since it is usable both in a more traditional desktop way (both on Windows and on Mac and on Linux) and through mobile devices. One of the best found of the game, possible just for this duality of use, is given by the complete support to cross play, regardless of the platform from which the game starts. The players are in fact “crammed” into a single master server, which makes it safely possible to start a game at home, in the comfort of your own bedroom, and then continue it away from home using our smartphone. In addition to many features common to massive fantasy-based role-playing games, Albon Online also incorporates other more specific features, such as a totally player-driven economy and a decidedly in-depth housing system. While not lacking in defects, Albion Online is one of those games that we strongly advise you to try!
The world of twelve at your fingertips
Economic Model: Free to Play
Description: Adapted specifically for use via smartphone and tablet, Touch is the portable version of Dofus, MMO already dear to PC players who can now enjoy the title in a way that has remained unpublished for a long time. With the typical graphic style also adopted by the desktop version of the game, with which Dofus Touch shares almost all the contents, this very particular MMO allows players to create their own character by opting for one of the 15 available classes, to then explore the immense World of the Twelve defeating the threats to the sound of turn-based fights. Equipped with an isometric view from above, Dofus Touch is surely configured as a very particular MMORPG, but able to incorporate all those who will appreciate mechanical and progression within its world.
Ready to customize your character to the extreme?
Economic Model: Free to Play
Description: Just take a quick look at this game to realize how everything in its interior spur “orientality” from all the pores. The look adopted by the developers for the realization of this MMORPG, in fact, follows quite faithfully all the classic stylistic elements of Japanese anime and even when it comes to the real characteristics of the gameplay its nature appears very evident, with long grind sessions to do it from master. In any case, Toram Online has several arrows to its bow, as boundless possibilities with regards to the personalization of one’s character, a game scheme disconnected from a real class system, which therefore allows a certain versatility of approach, and a visual compartment that, although outdated, still has its figure.
The 3D sequel to a historic 2D game
Publisher: Artix Entertainment
Economic Model: Free to Play
Description: Sequel of the previous Adventurequest, which due to its two-dimensional nature did not have the “3D” in the title as it happens for this sequel, also Adventurequest 3D follows quite faithfully the logic of the MMORPG cross-play, making itself available both on PC, via Steam, which on mobile platforms giving the user the possibility to keep his progress by switching from one version to another. Presenting itself with an exquisitely cartoon look, Adventurequest 3D yearns among its main features for the total lack of a well-defined class for its protagonist, who will then be free to switch at will his reference archetype, with the result of always keeping valid and versatile gameplay.
Lineage 2: Revolution
The revolution passes through the smartphone
Publisher: Netmarble Games
Economic Model: Free to Play
Description: As easily understood from the name of the game itself, Lineage 2: Revolution is an exclusive title for mobile platforms set in the same narrative universe as Lineage 2, a game that, despite the similarities, is available only for desktops. Compared to the main chapter, Revolution is configured as a prequel, being set 100 years before the events of the game released in 2003. Fans of the series will certainly not find it difficult to recognize some key aspects of the title, although obviously Revolution has had to go through a “mobile-ization” process that has led it to adapt, in terms of mechanics, to the peculiarities of smartphones . Much of the progression is in fact automatic but the beating heart of the historic Lineage series is more alive than ever, all driven by the Unreal Engine 4.
Old School RuneScape
Has anyone said “old school”?
Economic Model: Free to Play
Description: Able to achieve incredible success on mobile platforms, the smartphone version of Old School RuneScape is the direct conversion of the eponymous title released for desktop environments in 2013, in turn a remake, then adequately improved, of the original RuneScape , milestone in the history of MMOs. Never before in this case, the game is aimed at long-time players of the genus or those who intend to discover mechanics typically old school. Starting from the title, in fact, Old School RuneScape promises to bring back a game (and an epoch) now almost completely forgotten and, although it manages to do it in a completely successful way, the particular game mechanics could be a bit indigestible to those who are used to more modern experiences.
Villagers and Heroes
Welcome to this world of heroes and ordinary citizens
Publisher: Mad Otter Games
Economic Model: Free to Play
Description: By competing to outline a trend that is now very popular, Villagers and Heroes also found one of the strengths in the most radical cross-play, allowing players to play both traditionally via desktop and on the move via smartphone and / or tablet. Based on a typical sandbox game scheme, Villagers and Heroes presents a vaguely cartoon-like visual compartment, similar in some ways to that appreciated in World of Warcraft, with a fantasy setting. The game world is dashed with abundance and, among the main quests and numerous secondary activities, the things to be done will certainly not be missing, even though a real PvP sector is not currently present in the game. Flawless optimization and gameplay perfectly suited to mobile gaming close the circle.
Special Guest: Pokémon GO
Niantic’s augmented reality title is healthier than ever!
Economic Model: Free to Play
Description: Inserting a Pokémon GO into a list dedicated to MMO titles is perhaps a bit risky, but considering the atypical nature of the title and the many features in common with the massive titles, it is quite clear how the creation of Niantic can coexist with the other titles present here. On the game itself, to be honest, there is little to say, given the widespread rate that led him to be known even by those who do not chew a lot of video games. In any case, three years after its release, the game is more alive than ever, constantly supported with new content by its developers and much improved in gameplay compared to the first version. If you have always dreamed of being real Pokémon coaches, the game of Niantic is what comes closest to the basic philosophy of the historic series: wandering around the world, catching them all!

Skyforge is a free MMORPG developed by the Allods team with the help of Obsidian, the authors of Star Wars the Old Republic. The title is set in an imaginary world that mixes the imaginary sci-fi and medieval fantasy, in order to win a personality of its own. Unfortunately, the marriage between the two scenarios was only half successful, due to various elements whose coexistence sometimes creates situations at the limit of the grotesque.
The game includes a combat system strongly marked by action, in which it is however necessary to aim a target to direct the attack, but making available a combo system typical of action games in third person. Skyforge offers a classic quest scheme with instantiated settings and a progression system that closely resembles the Final Fantasy 10 spherography.
A real treat within the title in question is the possibility of becoming gods, complete with followers who will erect temples in our honor within the game world.
A title of undisputed value, which does not reach excellence, but which will guarantee hours and hours of pure fun for a large slice of players.
➔ Main points:
MMORPG free to play 2015 in English.
Original and stimulating progression system .
There is no open world : the whole game is extremely instantiated.
Possibility of becoming a divinity and having followers throughout the game world.
Italian community not very present or supported.
Of MMO, and in particular of MMORPGs, over the years we have had the opportunity to try many, some succeeded others a little less. Regardless of their qualitative ambitions, however, each of these titles tried to get us into their world; a world with its own rules, with its own civilizations, with peculiar places and characters that, for better or for worse, tried to tell us their story, making the player take a path that would have led him to an alternative reality. The title that we will talk about today, falls fully into this category and, perhaps for the first time ever, it will fall into a world halfway between science fiction and medieval fantasy.
Medieval sword in the foreground, futuristic sci-fi mitraglione in the background: it seems that someone has ended up in the wrong game …
Started for the first time Skyforge, it is pervaded by mixed feelings. The introduction opens with a flying vehicle that travels in the skies of what is, in effect, a classic representation of a city with a clear sci-fi inspiration. Once the shuttle crew is framed, we will immediately know what our alter ego will be; a silent guy with a face covered by the helmet of the one who remembers (not too much) vaguely the armor of a centurion in vogue at the time of the Roman Empire.
Skyforge tells the deeds of immortal beings, whose greatest ambition, as well as mission, is to become nothing less than real divinities, with all that this entails. Beyond the plot itself, however, what is most striking is the type of setting in which it was conceived: an imaginary universe that mixes, in the most ignorant way possible, the classic science fiction with the characteristic elements of the more glossy fantasy , the typically oriental one where the characters appear more like models than as grumpy fighters. The result is something certainly atypical, even rather original in some respects, even if the feeling of alienation that is felt in the first moments of play will recur several times during your games and, to be honest, it seems absolutely justified by the lack of a sense that derives from the desire to unite such different and faraway aspects.
The progression system is original, profound and extremely satisfying … especially when we have become gods!
Between centurions and flying cars
Before going on to play, let’s spend two words on the character creation editor. Without too many words, it is absolutely promoted, guaranteeing dozens and dozens of options on which to act to modify all the various parameters of our character. For each sex, there are various pre-set templates that can be selected to then make our changes.
It will be possible to change the features of the face, the build, the clothing, the posture, the voice and, more generally, it is possible to work on any aspect, even if not always in the desired way. The purely stylistic aspect seems to be something sought for specifically by the developers, who have taken care to provide the player with all the tools (and incentives) to create their own alter ego that is “cool”. Among other things, if any aspect of your hero no longer satisfies you, you can always go to the appropriate NPC and make all the necessary changes, and be sure that when we all say, we mean ALL (if there were any strange ideas, so make sure you give your character a name that is good for both boys and girls …
The Skyforge tutorial is perhaps one of the most immediate and at the same time spectacular seen recently in a MMORPG. Usually it starts rather slowly, the bases are explained slowly and the first enemies faced range from tender bunnies to plump little pigs.
Meetings between paladins and necromancers can quickly degenerate into Skyforge …
Skyforge, on the other hand, immediately throws us into the fray and not even the time we are told how to execute the basic attack that we immediately find ourselves leading to slashes left and right, with an opening sequence that would not look out of place in a hack ‘n slash in any third person. The combat system does not detach itself excessively from traditional systems, in fact to attack a target you must first frame it in the viewfinder and press the attack button intended for the action you want to perform . You will not be able to strike at random “in the air”, in a nutshell, yet despite this, the Skyforge combat system is one of the most frenetic and hectic that has been seen lately. If desired, during battles it is also possible to block the view on a certain enemy, allowing us to move freely without losing sight of our target.
Become a God!
Once the tutorial is complete, we will find ourselves in the main city of the game, a futuristic megalopolis, which will act as a hub to “sort” the players to the places of the missions, which will be assigned automatically whenever these become available. In any case, the first thing to do once we get there for the first time, will be to do some practice with the three initial classes that are made available to us in the game. The classes present are quite numerous, although initially only the lightbinder, the paladin and the cryomancer will be available, belonging respectively to the support classes, defensive and offensive. One of the main peculiarities of Skyforge is that our character is not bound in any way to a specific class and that it can be changed to (almost) every moment of the game. During battles, of course, it will not be possible to make the change but, at any other time, it will be enough to press a button to see our class modified, passing in an instant, for example, from an offensive class to a support class.
Maybe, one day, you too will complete the “Ascension” and find yourself with followers ready to erect temples in your honor for the whole game world.
In terms of gameplay, this translates into the possibility of adapting your character to the most disparate situations , both when playing solo, choosing each time the most efficient class for a given section, and when playing as part of a group , easily managing to balance any gaps in the party.
Arrived at a certain point, our character will be able to extend his powers and turn into God […] making us a small self-propelled tank damn fun to use.
It is a feature that convinces and is particularly functional to the rejuvenation of the gameplay, also and above all by virtue of the progression system adopted by the developers, disconnected from the accumulation of experience in the classical sense, where each class represents “something in itself”, but linked solely to the character, who will be able to strengthen himself in numerous different fields through what the game calls the “Ascension Atlas” system. This, in practice, is a huge graph studded with innumerable points that can be learned. Each point is characterized by its own color and, if we decide to learn it, it will give us the right to access a skill, an enhancement or another effect. The graph is truly boundless and allows onegrowth of your character targeted around the player’s decisions.
Based on the style of play that we feel most ours, in fact, we will be able to choose to devote ourselves more to strengthening a branch rather than another, deciding on the run what our hero will specialize in. Advancing in completing the ascension of Atlas will then reward us with prestige points, the only real indicator to identify the value of a player within Skyforge.
Arrived at a certain point, our character will be able to extend his powers and turn into God, a sort of temporary empowerment that will significantly increase our abilities , making us a small self-propelled tank damn fun to use. As well as the “normal” ones, even their appearance as gods have been extensively treated under the aesthetic form, giving us the opportunity to choose between different types of divinities.
Skyforge is an MMORPG that deserves a closer look … so here is our demonstration gameplay!
When the crossover does not bring the desired results
The technical component of Skyforge is not perfect, but it is absolutely well done as a whole and a step above the average of the other MMORPGs. The scenarios are made with care, the polygonal models are well detailed and the textures always appear well defined.
Spells, duels to the white weapon, and explosions … there is something for all tastes!
We can find some shortcomings in the animations that, although well done, have little coherence with each other, often resulting jerky and discontinuous, and in a rather marked aliasing, even when the various filters made available by the graphic settings of the game. Nothing too limiting, however, and the game remains always and in any case fully appreciable from a technical point of view; Of course, the requirements, although not very high, require a bit more resources to maintain an acceptable frame rate compared to other games, but they are requests that are however repaid by the graphic level offered.
If on the technical side we can be satisfied, then, on the stylistic side we need to make some clarifications. Practically every single thing, from the settings (which in more than one occasion deserves a praise to the developers) to the armor, has an aesthetic design of very valuable workmanship, evocative and well thought out, provided you extrapolate it from the context and examine it for itself. What is not at all convincing, in fact, is the general picture which, as mentioned at the beginning, mixes sci-fi with medieval fantasy, generating a union that, leaving out any personal taste, appears objectively not very sensible, with different offsets that sometimes they really look like a punch in the eye. To give a practical example,to see individuals with a vaguely punk look, dressed from head to toe with leather clothes, to launch elemental magic appears initially surreal, to then lead to a loud laugh of hilarity when in our party, perhaps on a mission in a remote village in the mountains, a buxom career woman in office attire (with lots of sexy secretary glasses attached) makes her appearance equipped with sword and shield taken from the medieval imagination.
The charm of the settings is undeniable …
In many situations, it seems to be in front of a moddata version of a random Elder Scrolls from Morrowind onwards. Please note if you did not understand: we do not criticize the realization, but the consistency, raped in the name of originality.
So, to sum up, what can you say about this Skyforge? The title of Allods Team is without any doubt a good title that deserves to be tried. As in 99.99% of the titles that offer a vastness comparable to the MMOs, not everything is perfect, and there are features that could make some players turn up their nose more or less sharply. However, Skyforge is an interesting game, with a combat system that offers frenzy and action, with peace of mind for those looking for a quieter experience. The missions that the game requires us to face have turned out to be almost entirely enjoyable, even though the type of game with instances may no longer be appreciated as it used to be.
As a whole, we can only positively promote the Allods team title, recommending without reservation to try to give them a chance; you may find yourself pleasantly surprised.
After an unlucky first period in which it had not been appreciated at best (commercially speaking), Aion, Ncsoft’s MMORPG, embraced the free to play game model , making a high-end product arrive on our computers in completely free.
By choosing and customizing our PG from two different races we will be ready to immerse ourselves in the world of Atreia. On the quest side, the game is a classic massive RPG with tons of missions to accomplish with objectives such as fighting and collecting various items. On the PvP side, on the other hand, the game takes on the characteristic of presenting enormous battles without a quarter where people get beaten up without knowing how to read or write. On the battlefield (Abyss), in addition to the two races at war with each other, there will be a third deployment (controlled by the computer) which will add further cannon fodder to the whole.
Graphically, thanks to the use of Crytek’s CryEngine graphic engine, the game is a real spectacle for the eyes, giving back perfectly modeled characters and postcard-like scenarios impossible to not admire.
Aion is a great title that, once the justification of the monthly fee (which has been eliminated) has been removed, it really has no more reasons not to be tried.
➔ Main points:
Extremely classic MMORPG translated into Italian.
Much played in our country.
Excellent graphics on exit, but now slightly dated .
Get your wings off and take flight … nothing but mount!
Over the years, there has been an increasing number of attempts to oust the ever-WoW form from the most played MMORPG podium ever. Of the self-proclaimed “anti-warcraft” games they came out in abundance but, unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) nobody ever really came out of the comparison against the champion.
Also due to the crisis, in one of the most difficult genres to maintain, like that of MMOs, a curious phenomenon has developed. To cope with the not-so-excellent commercial results, many manufacturers have had to align many of their products with free formats or, in any case, very facilitated from a monetary point of view, in order to save them from the brink of bankruptcy.
This is the case of Aion, a MMORPG developed with a high budget that is now possible to play for free .
The game is set in the world of Atreia, now in ruins where, following a war of enormous proportions, a literal rift has been created that has divided it into two distinct parts, one radiated by the brightness of the light populated by the elisians, the other immersed in darkness and inhabited by the Asmodians.
The narrative background of the game is, however, more complex than this and, if you wish, the game provides us with various opportunities to deepen our knowledge of the world of Atreia; here, it suffices to know that the two factions (Elyos and Asmodians) are at war with each other and that, needlessly to do so, the player will be asked to choose which race to take sides with.
Light and shadow: eternal rivals
As already mentioned, the player will have the task of choosing between Elyos and Asmodians. The Asmodians are enchanting beings, with almost perfect features and that, although this definition is not entirely correct, one could say that their appearance follows what is usually attributed to the array of “good”. Asmodians, on the other hand, are beings who rarely saw the light of the sun; their appearance has changed proportionally to this characteristic, they are dark creatures, sometimes with bestial traits.
The choice is rather radical and, once opted for one of the two races, we will not be able to create characters belonging to the rival faction if we do not first change servers or delete all those already created. Once the race is chosen, we can decide which class to belong to, choosing from a rose of six: warrior, explorer, magician, priest, engineer and artist. The classes are all well differentiated between them and, once a certain level is reached, each of them can evolve into different specializations. The side relative to the mere aesthetic customization of our character is also excellent; the present editor is not the most profound ever seen but still maintains excellent levels. The parameters on which to act are very many and, whether you want to create an elf with a model body or a perfect midget to play as a retired Santa Claus, there is no risk of being disappointed.
How to Icarus?
Aion, keyboard in hand, is a full-blown MMORPG. Wandering around the world we are given tons of quests to complete, all of which are based on the previous ones, some more or less. The tasks to be carried out, in fact, are more or less always the same and if you expect big variations from the classic scheme “go, kill tot. X and come back ”, the risk of not seeing one’s expectations met is quite high.
The quests are more a way to have a sort of “guide” that accompanies us in the growth of our character than anything else, despite those related to the main plot they let themselves play with pleasure. Lately, several MMORPGs have been seen around that have partly embraced action features to streamline the fighting and refresh the gameplay; Aion is not part of this category and remains faithfully anchored to what are the original cornerstones of the genre. Combat takes place by targeting an enemy and selecting various abilities. Timing and reflexes of the player are more than marginal.
Particularly sponsored by the game itself is the ability, at level 10, to be able to fly. Our character will get real wings, which can be different and with different bonuses, which will allow us to flutter for the maps. To tell the truth, this addition does not always blend perfectly into the context. In the PVP clashes it is an important addition to the tactical nature of the fights but, as far as the ordinary sections and the exploration are concerned, it is only a means, limited in time among other things, to travel long distances in less time.
In Aion the PVP was treated with some care. Starting from level 25 you will be able to access a special area called “the Abyss”. The Abyss is a sort of middle ground, located between the lower realm (belonging to the Elyos) and the upper one, belonging to the Asmodians. Wanting to use practical terms, the Abyss is a sort of huge battlefield in which Elyos, Asmodians and Balaur give themselves a blessing without worrying too much about good manners. The Balaur are another non-playable breed, present in more than generous amounts in the abyss and which, basically, deals with arranging any imbalances between the two teams inside the abyss. The beauty of the abyss is that, unlike the other areas, there are no restrictions on the use of wings, which can be used practically anywhere and at any time. In addition to greatly favoring the speed of displacement, the unrestricted use of the wings allows different and more reasoned approaches to combat, which will see us engaged in the consideration of vertical as well as horizontal directions. In the abyss there are also particular fortresses that can be conquered by one of the factions, giving rise to large-scale epic fights.
The glory of a time gone by
The graphics engine that moves the game is a specially modified version of the CryEngine, an engine that, at the time, was able to make more than one player drop his jaw.
Getting the wings will be one of the most important steps to take, as well as one of the most influential in terms of gameplay.
When Aion came out he earned the reputation of being one of the most graphically MMORPGs ever, and with good reason. Time, however, is the worst enemy of the graphic avant-gardes and, unfortunately, even Aion could not escape this law. Please note, it is still a beautiful title to see, with dreamlike landscapes and well-shaped and animated characters; only that, over time, other games have come out that have ousted him from his throne, making him lose a record that, right up until a few years ago, he was entitled to.
They have dozens of fantasy MMORPGs and hardly one comes out able to tick all the others; Aion is one of these. Well-groomed, refined, fun and long-lived, the NCsoft title is able to offer as much as expected. Of course, he has now somewhat lost the glaze he had at his exit, not so much in terms of mechanics and contents that, over time, have been extended and refined, but rather, in the competition that has definitely become more fierce than in past. Last note: the title was not born free to play, but it has become; consequently you will have the quality of a paid title without having to shell out a penny.
